Our approach

What sustainable investing means to us

For us at Heartwood, sustainable investing means making you money while achieving better environmental, societal and governance outcomes.

The following film explains how we do this:

2 award-winning managers
3 year track record
4 sustainable strategies

Most of you will have seen distressing documentaries and news stories showing climate breakdown, plastic pollution and dangerous working practices, to name just a few. And we're sure you'll agree that we need to make changes now to create a better world for current and future generations.

Indeed, our consumption patterns are already reflecting a change for the better, from reusable mugs and bags for life to sustainable fashion and recyclable packaging.

When we need to buy, we're increasingly trying to buy responsibly and buying responsibly now includes your investment portfolio.

As well as helping you make money, your investments can contribute less to the bad and more to the good of society. You have the potential to make a profit out of investing in themes such as renewable energy, healthcare and social housing, amongst others.

Profit and social contribution should no longer be seen as mutually exclusive.

Our process

There are three pillars to our sustainable investment process:

Exclusions. We don't invest in businesses that focus on tobacco, alcohol or weapons or engage in pornography or gambling.

Environmental, Societal & Governance (ESG) Integration. These are investment products that try first, to invest in companies that have positive ESG factors and second, to invest in companies and governments that can evidence commitment to improve their ESG scores.

Impact investing. Impact investing is a vital part of our sustainable investment strategy where the goal is to make money by solving a specific problem, such as building social housing or renewable energy generation, or researching biotech solutions for hard-to-treat diseases or conditions.

Our Sustainable funds

We offer four global multi asset sustainable funds that are available for investors with all levels of risk tolerance.

These portfolios are actively managed with same investment process as our core funds:

- Long-term asset allocation (strategic)

- Adjustment of the asset allocation based on market conditions (tactical)

- Portfolio implementation (investments)

Heartwood's Sustainable strategies

Each of our funds has a clear target return benchmark and aims to deliver a positive real return (that is, after the effects of inflation are removed) over any given five-year period. We refer to this as a rolling five-year period. They are tailored to a specific risk profile, which means that they aim to produce returns based on the amount of risk that an investor is willing to take. Each fund therefore has a different mix of assets depending on whether it is a high or low risk. With these funds, our aim is to provide the building blocks you need to meet your risk/return objectives through sustainable investing.
