Heartwood in the community

This autumn, Heartwood joined the Envision mentoring scheme, which partners local businesses together with schools to encourage young people to work on projects to raise money for charity. The programme joined Heartwood together with students at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Crayford Academy on a project to raise money for the Ben Kinsella Trust, which strives to tackle knife crime in London.

Over three months, the Heartwood mentoring group have provided advice and guidance to the students regarding their presentation skills, teamwork and professional aspirations in life, as well as supporting them in their fundraising campaign. The mentoring programme culminated with the students and mentoring team organising a charity auction, raffle and bake sale at Heartwood to raise funds for the Ben Kinsella Trust, along with a presentation by the students to all staff about the work of the charity and their experiences on the Envision programme.

The students then went on to clinch first prize at Envision’s charity final, which commended the Haberdashers’ Askes’ team for their outstanding presentation and team work, as well as for raising the most money for their charity.

Envision is an excellent scheme for young people and Heartwood are proud to have been involved as a mentor. It was very rewarding to see how the students developed their confidence and their organisational and presentational skills during the programme.
